Zink Printers Available Late 2007

August 13, 2007 – Zink Imaging, Inc., the Waltham, Massachusetts-based Polaroid offshoot has released details of the inkless mobile printers they announced this past winter. Digital Camera-Printer allows users to shoot 7-megapixel digital images with a 3x optical zoom, then immediately print the images out on the same device on 2-inch-by-3-inch paper. The Mobile Printer uses the same printing technology and prints from digital cameras and cell phone cameras via a wireless or USB connection. Both printers are scheduled for a late 2007 release. The Digital Camera-printer has an estimated retail price of $199, with a pack of ten sheets of paper for $1.69.

The Zink integrated Digital Camera-Printer will contain a 2-inch color LCD screen for viewing and previewing images, as well as multiple capture and flash modes. The camera/printer will accept SD cards.

Like the Digital Camera-Printer, the Mobile Printer also will run on an integrated rechargeable battery. It will use the same 2-by-3-inch paper, which will also be available with sticky backs. Users will be able to connect their Mobile Printer to any PictBridge-enabled cameras with a USB cable, or they can print form a wireless-capable cell phone camera.

Zink’s "Zero Ink" printing technology is mostly contained in the paper. Heating elements inside the printers activate the dye crystals within the 2-by-3-inch sheets in response to the image information. A protective overcoat layer makes the prints durable and long-lasting. The company recently purchased a sprawling manufacturing facility from Konica Minolta in Whitsett, North Carolina, where the new paper will be produced. Zink plans to maintain the current employees at the facility to run the Zink paper manufacturing process.
