Epson Closing Online Photo Sharing Site

7 March 2008 - Last month Sony pulled the plug on it’s online photo sharing site, ImageStation, and now Epson is doig the same: their PhotoCenter site will close its doors on April 30, 2008. Much like Kodak Gallery and many pharmacy photo center websites like Walgreens and CVS, the Epson PhotoCenter website allowed users to upload, organize, edit, and share photos. Epson announced because of the abundance of other sites that provide the same services, they’ve decided to shut theirs down.

Epson PhotoCenter

Opening new accounts was restricted January 24, 2008 and uploading new photographs was blocked on February 1, 2008. Epson stated it did not want to encourage further uploads seeing as they would need to be removed soon after.

To help aid user’s transition out of Epson’s PhotoCenter, they’ve included instructions on how to retrieve photos from the site. Epson recommended users switch to Google’s Picasa, but they do not offer a seamless transition: users will have to download their photographs to their computers and then upload them again to Picasa or another alternative online photo center. Additionally, users will have to download photographs one at a time; Epson are not providing a way to download multiple photographs.

All accounts and photographs will be deleted April 30, 2008. For more information, please visit Epson’s PhotoCenter website.
