Epson PictureMate Show PM 300 Compact Photo Printer Review

The PictureMate Show PM 300 is a combination of a photo frame and printer, but that combination involves a lot of compromises that make it an imperfect device.
As a digital photo frame, the device is way too large: the bulky case is going to take up way more space than a dedicated photo frame. As a printer, the device works pretty well, though, and it is cheap to use; the high capacity of the cartridges means that each print costs about 25 cents. That is very reasonable for a printer of this type: most cost 30 to 50 cents per print. The PictureMate PM 300 costs $299.

Sony DPP-F700 Compact Photo Printer Review
The DPP-F700 is a hybrid device: part digital photo frame and part printer. And, like most hybrids, that means it has both the good and the bad from both types of device. We found that it produced decent quality prints (albeit with slightly inaccurate color), but that it was rather awkward to use as both a printer and a digital photo frame. The DPP-F700 costs $199.

Canon Pixma iP2702 Printer Review
The iP2702 is a cheap printer: it costs just $49, which isn't much more than the cost of the two ink cartridges it uses. But that doesn't make it a bad printer, and we found that it produced good performance overall. And you can't really argue with the price.

HP Photosmart D7560 Inkjet Printer Review
The HP Photosmart D7560 is a cheap printer: at around $100, it certainly won't break the bank. But the quality of the prints it produces is anything but cheap, with very decent color accuracy and good detail. It doesn't produce the same color accuracy and detail as more expensive printers, but it does provide excellent value for money for anyone who wants to print high quality photos without spending a fortune.

Epson Artisan 50 Inkjet Printer Review
The Epson Artisan 50 costs about $100, but it produces high quality prints. What it lacks, though, is flexibility: this is a no-frills printer with no memory cards, no LCD screens and very basic software. However, it has it where it counts, and it's a good pick if you need a cheap, simple printer for producing photo prints up to letter size and occasional documents.

Canon Pixma Pro 9500 Mark II Photo Printer Review

The Canon Pro 9500 Mark II is a serious printer, in every sense of the word. The pigment inks it uses produce very deep blacks and could manage a greater range of colors than most. But it's also a seriously expensive printer, at $849, and most photographers will be happy with a cheaper printer that produces decent prints (such as the Canon Pro 9000 Mark II or the Epson R1900). As such, it will only appeal to serious photographers who want top quality prints and don't mind paying extra for it.

HP Photosmart B8850 Photo Printer Review
The HP Photosmart B8550 is a high-end photo printer that can handle big prints: up to 13 x 19 inches on a single sheet, or even larger as banner prints. It produces good quality prints, with good color accuracy and deep blacks. But it's a noisy printer and it takes some time to set up and use.

Epson Stylus Photo R1900 Photo Printer Review

The Epson Stylus R1900 Photo Printer (or the R1900 to its friends) is a serious piece of printing eqipment for the photographer who wants to produce large top quality prints. It cna handle paper at up to 13 x 19 inches, and can produce even bigger 13 x 44 inch prints from a special roll of paper. And it does a great job; we found that the prints it produces were sharp, had accurate color and would grace even the most discerning photographer's walls. But it's a rather slow printer at the highest quality settings, and it's big and bulky.

Canon Pixma Pro 9000 Mark II Photo Printer Review
The new kid on the photo printer block is the Canon PIXMA Pro 9000 Mark II, an $499 photo printer can can produce borderless prints at up to 13 by 19 inch size. As the name suggests, it's an update to the Pro 9000 (which we reviewed here) that brings a number of new tricks to the game, including faster printing and a two picoliter drop size. We found that it performed well overall, with good color accuracy and deep blacks. But it wasn't the fastest printer on the block, and it can't print to DVDs or banner-sized paper.
